Frequently Asked Questions
Where do we meet?
We can connect by phone (US phone numbers only) or Zoom to discuss your health concerns, talk about the results to lab tests you ordered on yourself or that your other doctor ordered, set health goals, and answer your questions about various conditions, tests, and protocols.
Consultations with me are typically information-packed and inspiring. They are a wonderful addition to local care provided by your primary care physician or other specialist.
Can I see Dr. Z in person?
What about blood tests and other functional medicine testing?
Depending on where you are located, I may be able to order lab tests for you, including blood tests, saliva tests, and urine tests.
In many states and places in the world, you may also or order testing on yourself. Options in the United States for ordering your own lab tests include Ulta Labs (with blood typically drawn at Quest Diagnostics), Any Lab Test Now, ZRT, or other direct access lab. I may offer suggestions on which third party sites I think may be most convenient for you.
You are also of course welcome to contact your healthcare provider and ask them to order the testing I suggest – especially if you want the testing covered by your health insurance plan. (Note that not all healthcare providers are willing to accommodate such requests.)
Who is my physician? Where do I get my prescription medications?
Remote consultations are not a substitute for in-person care. By law I will not be acting as your physician and thus cannot prescribe Rx drugs. I request that all of my clients have a primary care provider.*
I may, however, offer insight into herbs, supplements, and other natural products, which can be purchased through my online shop or elsewhere. I may also mention over-the-counter remedies and/or prescription medications worth discussing with your healthcare provider.
And you can absolutely bet I’ll offer insights about nutrition, lifestyle, and exercise, and recommend books, websites, apps, and other resources to support you in the process of healing.
Is Dr. Zelfand a real doctor?
Yes, I am a real doctor – a licensed Naturopathic Physician, to be exact.
I am a graduate of a CNME-accredited Naturopathic Medical School. I also have completed a residency in family medicine. I hold a license to practice Naturopathic Medicine in the state of Oregon – a state in which Naturopathic Physicians (abbreviated NDs or NMDs, depending on the state) are considered primary care providers, much like MDs and DOs.
Unlike most MDs and DOs, however, NDs have comprehensive training in nutrition, herbal medicine, and other natural therapies – in addition to the regular biomedical coursework required of primary care providers in the West.
In addition to being trained in and licensed to order diagnostic tests, diagnose illness, perform minor surgery, and prescribe pharmaceuticals and other treatments, I also hold a DEA license to prescribe controlled substances like ketamine and testosterone.
That being said, my Oregon-based medical practice is currently full, and I do not foresee it opening up any time soon. So I can only act as your consultant, not your physician.
If I want psychedelic healing, where do I source the medicine?
While I offer consultations to discuss the risks, benefits, and nuances of entheogenic healing, I will not tell you where to buy mushrooms or other illicit substances, nor will I connect you with “underground” practitioners.
I can, however, refer you to clinical trials enrolling participants, to psilocybin churches, and to facilities/practitioners working in parts of the world where psychedelic substances are legal.
I can also recommend ketamine therapy on U.S. soil.
Visit the psychedelic medicine page for more details.
What are your rates and how do I pay?
The online scheduling system includes transparent details about cost for each type of appointment and relevant no-show fees. You will be able to see the cost of the appointment prior to booking.
The system will prompt you to enter your credit card (or HSA/FSA card) number at the time of booking. Payment is processed in full at the time of scheduling, but will be refunded in part or whole if you need to cancel (minus any late cancellation/no-show fees, if applicable).
Do you accept my insurance? How about HSA and FSA?
Do I need to buy a whole package of visits, or can I start with just one?
Visits are booked one at a time.
Some of my clients have just one or two sessions with me to help point them in the right direction. Other clients check in with me every few weeks to continue chipping away at chronic health issues. I’m here to support you as much or as little as you desire.
